A Newbery Medal Book

I think this is the earliest that I have ever completed a TBR challenge. I finished this book about 2 days into the month. 🙂

The One and Only Ivan is a Newbery Medal book, so it fit the challenge of reading a book that won an award. This book was totally different and unique. I really enjoyed it. The story is told from the perspective of a silverback gorilla that has been held captive in a circus themed mall. You would think that it would be hard to get into, but it was really amazing!

The characters were so well-developed (even thought they were animals). You really get a sense of how they felt being kept in captivity. At times it was very real and heartbreaking. Ivan had many fiends in the little circus. There was Stella (the elephant), Bob (the little mutt that slept in Ivan’s domain), Ruby (the baby elephant) and Julia (the custodian’s daughter). It was also interesting to see how Ivan and the other animals viewed humans and their behaviors.

In the story, Ivan likes to create art. I thought that added an interesting aspect to the story. Ivan would draw the things in his domain and try to express his feelings about the world and the situation he was in.

All in all, this was a quick read. The chapters were short and there was large spacing between paragraphs. But, it was so good! I really loved how different this book was. So far I am off to a good start with my month of award-winning books.

Have  you read this book? What did you think? Let me know in the comments section!

  1. I loved this book! I have read it twice. Absolutely astonishing. Made me want to cry in many places; some because of sadness, some of happiness! I am a very, very new blogger. Please look at my blog! abookwormsperfectapple.wordpress.com
