This was my first graphic novel! I was so excited to dive into this read for that reason.
This graphic novel is unique because it has three stories lines being told throughout the novel. One is a fable about the Monkey King. Then there is the story of Jin Wang, a Chinese American boy, and Danny, your all American boy. The stories are separate with seemingly no connections until the end. In reviews for this book, I heard that the ending was very surprising. I really did not see that ending coming! I wish that the ending was longer. After seeing how the stories intertwined, the story just ended. I feel like the author could have taken away some of the beginning and added more to the ending. It just ended too quickly after the reveal.
However, this graphic novel has a really important message. The stories all involve the lessons of fitting in and being accepted.
This graphic novel was a quick read (I finished it in one sitting). I also enjoyed the artwork. However, I am not convinced that graphic novels are for me. I don’t want to bail out after just one book though. Let me know if you have any suggestions for good graphic novels!
